What do you think of this for Elk hunting in Colorado?
Price not being an issue, this is what I am possibly looking to get for Elk hunting in Colorado. As far as caliber, reliability, quality, etc, what do you think?

It’s a Kimber 8400 Montana in .338 Win Mag. Do know any other rifles that are comparable or better? Even if it’s a different caliber.
I agree that will do just fine. I suggest using a 225 gr bonded bullet from one of the better cartridge companies. Also get a quality scope that can handle recoil.

You can always spend more money on a rifle but it wont make the elk anymore dead.

I have known people who used the .270, .308, .30-06. 7mm mag, 300 mag and so forth but the .338 is a tried and true elk round. With a well placed shot it drops them with authority. You don’t want a super light rifle for the magnum rifles they will beat the snot out of you at the range. And that’s where most of the shooting is done, not on the hunt. And if you cant pack a rifle that weighs 7 + pounds your going to have real problems packing all that meat out.

I suggest you buy a high quality pair of binoculars. Glassing is a big part of elk hunting. Unlike deer a spooked elk will run for miles. I have hunted the Rockies from Colorado to Idaho/Montana. Elk will move in the morning to an area to bed down midday and move again in late evening. This link explains all this;

So if you are smart you can save lots of bushwacking by scouting out an elk area. Find where they are moving and place yourself down wind of where they will be. I have seen elk hunter all worn out and beat up from navigating thick timber and brush. When they could have just followed the drainage to where the elk will cross and wait for them in the morning or evening. Elk can see movement and hear damn good, they will hear a hunter smashing through brush long before the hunter is near. I have sneeked up to bedded down elk by de-scenting all my clothes and shower with unscented soap and moving at a snail pace to them from down wind. This is very difficult and they may spook from a few twigs snapping underfoot. So I learned to; scout, be at the right place in the wee hours of early dawn and wait for them to head to their midday bedding area. My bro in-law and I have it down so well we get our elk in the first 5 hours of the second day 90% of the time. And have done so since the late 70s.
