While the new year might mean more of an effort towards improving the safety of one’s home, the fact is that these days, not everyone has the extra cash lying around to really make a sizable investment in most things, let alone a great deal of fancy equipment to better protect his or her house. However, there is a misconception that a bunch of gear somehow means security, and a number of other simple steps can lead to a whole lot of protection and peace of mind, without having to dig too deep into the bank account. Here some surefire ways to beef up your home security without spending too much.
Look at the locks. This is your first line of defense if someone actually decides that they want to break into your house, and the level of ease or difficulty with which a robber is faced can often determine whether or not they will go ahead with the planned robbery or decide to try another house. Be sure that deadbolts actually go all the way into the doorframe, that both doors and windows are locked every single time that people leave the house, and consider making simple improvements. One of the best things to do is cut a bunch of sturdy pieces of wood and fix them into the frames of sliding doors and windows. This way, even if a lock is forced open, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to force the door or window open.
Take preventative measures when it comes to the trash. After the holidays or moving days, there sure are a lot of boxes that practically advertise the new contents of houses. Disposing of a box that makes it clear you just got a computer or television? It’s a lot more beneficial for your home security to go ahead and break that down instead of putting it on the curb for every would-be robber to see.
Identify your own weaknesses/take a peek at your own routine. Do you notice that the house is regularly left unlocked, with windows open? Are you prone to forgetting to set the home Alarm System or worse yet, do you leave the door between the garage and the house open but shut the garage door? Remember that the safety of your home starts directly with you, and that it is the way that you handle your own routine that is actually the most influential factor in how safe your home stays.
Get involved in the community. In neighborhoods where there is open communication between homeowners and everyone is looking out for one another, there are significantly less instances of crime. This is an excellent strategy not just for improving home security, but also for improving a sense of community, something that so many people are missing as of late.
